Level 11: Io Sulfur Mine | Hermia: I frown upon him, yet he loves
me still. Helena: O that your frowns would teach my smiles such skill! Hermia: I give him curses, yet he gives me love. Helena: O that my prayers could such affection move! Hermia: The more I hate, the more he follows me. Helena: The more I love, the more he hateth me. Hermia: His folly, Helena, is no fault of mine. Helena: None, but your beauty; would that fault were mine! Hermia: Take comfort: he no more shall see my face; Lysander and myself will fly this place. A Midsummer Night's Dream, Act I, Scene 1

This level is one of the ultimate tests of your ability to maneuver in lava. Most of this level is either cooled lava or actual lava. You will be meeting all sorts of enemies in this level.

The hostages in the level are located within a certain area
of the level fairly close to the yellow key. They are guarded by a Medium
Hulk, a cloaked Medium Hulk, and three Class 1 Drillers.
It is highly suggested that you rescue the hostages after you have retrieved the red key. The side passage indicated goes into a room where you can see the yellow key, but will be blocked by grating. |

The blue key is located in a pit full of lava. It is minimally
guarded by Class 1 Drones. Just pick up the key, grab the smart missile
located within this area, destroy the enemies, and leave the area from
the way you came in.
The blue door is located within a series of rooms perched on a huge cylindrical shaped room. This is not the room coming off the entrance to the mine. You may have to perform some exploration in the lava tunnels to find this area. |
If you found the correct cylindrical shaped room and went all the way to the top, you will encounter the blue door to your left.
If you are low on shields, you may get more by turning to the right. Destroy the Spider Processing Robot in the room with the weapons powerups. Next, lay a proximity mine right under the room with the shield powerups. (You won't be able to open the door yet.) Next. enter the room with the weapons powerups. The door leading to the shield powerups will open and at least one Spider Drone will hit the proximity mine. Destroy the rest and grab the shield powerup.
Arm your homing missiles and open the blue door.
Right when you enter the door, you will encounter a Secondary Lifter. Back up, and fire a homing missile. This will destroy it. Continue down the passageway.
At the end, you will see a cloaking device. Grab it and IMMEDIATELY slide in any direction. The yellow key is guarded by two Super Hulks. You may either destroy the hulks and grab the key, or you may grab the key and make a dash for the way you came from, since it is the only way out.
The yellow key is located within a niche in this room.
To get to the red key and the yellow door, you will have to find a room with a shaft containing a robot generator.
![]() |
Once you reach the room described earlier, the robot generator
will activate, forming Spider Processing Robots and Class 1 Drones. Destroy
them until the generator turns off.
Once it turns off, go down the shaft ALL THE WAY. You will encounter a Class 1 Drone with mine capabilities. Destroy it with a homing missile, and destroy the Super Hulk guarding the red key. Be careful, since this area is in lava. Once you have grabbed the red key, go back and retrieve the hostages, and then head for the yellow door which is located with the same shaft a little above the red key. Switch to your fusion cannon if you have it. |
Once you enter the yellow door, you will come under attack by cloaked Medium Lifters. Destroy them with the fusion cannon. They should drop cloaking devices. Next, pick up the shield powerups indicated on the map.
Go down the corridor and you will see a Super Hulk. Destroy it as quickly as possible and pick up the fusion cannon located over the lava pit. (Don't worry, there is no trap here.)
Note the location of the exit. This is very important. This particular exit is one of the most easily missed of all the exits. Once you have noted the exit, go to the red door and enter it.
The reactor room is almost completely lava. The reactor is guarded by some number of Class 1 Drones with mine capabilities. The difficult part of this room is that it is difficult to maneuver due to its honeycomb structure.
The best way to tackle the room is to stay in one spot, and using your homing missiles to destroy the drones. Then, go down and destroy the drones that show up with a homing missile. As you go down, you will meet more mines and drones. Use your flares to blow the mines from a distance and continue destroying drones. Once you reach the bottom, go back up the other way and continue destroying drones and mines. By destroying all drones and mines, you will ensure yourself of an unobstructed path to the exit.
Once you blow the reactor in the bottom, immediately head back up. If you are heading up, you are going the correct way. Then quickly head for the exit.
